A Jock Needs His Athletic Supporter
The right athletic supporter can enhance sports performance
Although it’s always out of sight, the athletic supporter is a must for a serious jock. Before engaging in any sports activity an athlete needs the proper gear for protection and performance enhancement. Ill-fitting gear can result in poor performance or physical injury. But no matter what sport he engages in, from sparsely-clad swimming to fully-protected hockey, a male athlete will need a good athletic supporter.
“Jockstrap”, another term for the athletic supporter comes from the word “jockey” meaning “rider” which, in turn, came from the Scots “jock” for “John” eventually used to refer to “man, boy” or “male” in general. Through time, “jock” was used to refer to “athlete”. Bicycle riders or “bike jockeys” during the 1800′s in Boston would ride over cobblestoned streets and the first athletic supporter was invented to give them protection from all those bumps.
Wear the Right Athletic Shirts
The most basic but the most variable of athletic sportswear
Men’s athletic shirts are one of the most common of all athletic apparel together with athletic supporters. They come in all types from T-shirts to long johns and in all fabrics. Because they have closest contact with the body, athletic shirts must take into consideration temperature, abrasion, flexibility and stress.
There are athletic shirts with long sleeves and short sleeves, shirts which absorb moisture, resist odor, loose fitting or tight clinging, shirts for basketball, baseball, football, golf and any sport you care to name. The most important characteristic of athletic shirts, however, is comfort. Here are some tips to help you get the most comfort out of your athletic shirts.
The Importance of Athletic Training Programs
It’s about helping athletes get back on their feet … and more
Athletic training programs are special courses for trainers and health care professionals who assist doctors in helping athletes prevent and overcome injuries suffered in the course of their sports activities. However, athletic trainers also work with non-athletes who are physically active. More than half of athletic trainers work with people of all ages outside of athletic environments.
With their special expertise, athletic trainers work as extensions of doctors in emergency rooms, urgent care centers, military hospitals, physical therapy clinics and anywhere that people require specialized medical assistance. However, it is in the field of sports that the special skills of athletic trainers have been recognized. The extreme physical demands on athletes have made athletic trainers an invaluable part of any sports organization.
Special Types of Athletic Supporter
Athletes of different sports need different protection
The athletic supporter, also known as a jockstrap, is an essential part of a male athlete’s protective gear. Invented in 1874 to provide protection for bicycle riders from the bumps of Boston’s cobblestoned streets, the athletic supporter has become standard equipment for “jocks”. The company that invented the athletic supporter eventually became the Bike Company and its brand is still the market leader in athletic supporters today.
The athletic supporter first found a role in medical practice when an electric-powered athletic supporter known as the Heidelberg Electric Belt was introduced claiming to cure kidney ailments, erectile dysfunction and even insomnia. Today, the medical application of the athletic supporter is as penile support after surgery.
During the 80′s and early 90′s, the athletic supporter gave way to compression shorts, similar to today’s cycling shorts, which incorporated the functions of the athletic supporter. More recently, however, the athletic supporter has enjoyed a renaissance among athletes of different sports, giving rise to signature brands like Calvin Klein.
